The AchieveAbility project organised a variety of events throughout the project lifecycle. Details of these can be found in the Project Achievements part of the about us section of the website.

The AchieveAbility Network are continuing to co-ordinate events for the membership, SpLD learners, parents and practitioners. Details of upcoming AchieveAbility Network events and related conferences will be posted here as they become available.

Fair for all


On 11th September 2008 the Academic Professional Development Unit and Teacher Fellows at De Montfort Univeristy are hosting the following one day conference Fair for all: Practical Strategies for Equality and Inclusivity

Key speakers include;
Mick Healey, Professor of Geography and Director of the Centre for Active Learning at the University of Gloucester. He has published extensively in Geography but his main research area is now learning and teaching in HE. Mick has led several major government funded projects, and he is Co-Director of an ESRC project on “Enhancing the quality and outcomes of disabled students’ learning in higher education”. He will speak on 'disability and learning difference'.

Glynis Cousin has recently taken up post at the University of Wolverhampton as Director of the Institute for Learning Enhancement and of the Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning (Enabling Achievement within a Diverse Student Body). Glynis has worked on a number of national and international higher education research and evaluation projects and is currently completing a book on higher education research methods. She will speak on internationalisation and cosmopolitan approaches.

Equality practice and your school


On the 18th September The General Teaching Council for England (GTC) is inviting teachers to participate in a seminar to discuss how schools can be better supported to implement the equality duties, and ensure that they have a positive impact on pupil learning and wider outcomes.

As part of its equality policy development the GTC is holding this seminar in order to;

  • discuss what your school is doing to meet the gender, race and disability equality duties;


  • test our proposals on the support that schools need to implement fully the range of equality legislation;


  • give teachers an opportunity to inform GTC thinking; and,


  • share and discuss good equality practice with other colleagues.


  • The seminar will be held on 18 September, from 10.30am – 3.30pm at the GTC London Office. Lunch and refreshments will be provided.

    Optimising Recruitment


    On the 23rd and 25th September 2008 Action on Acces are delivering two seminars 'Optimising Recruitment: Targeting and Recruiting Disabled Students.

    Action on Access are inviting you to attend one of two free of charge Action on Access seminars. The seminars offer staff involved in marketing, recruitment, outreach and schools liaison activities in higher education the opportunity to;
  • update their knowledge relating to disability issues in marketing and outreach

  • self-assess the inclusiveness of current practice

  • share practice with colleagues

  • plan for future inclusion within activities


  • Attending one of these events will help marketing and outreach staff to;
  • develop more inclusive practices

  • ensure reasonable adjustments for disabled people participating in activities


  • The seminars are taking place in London on the 23rd September and in Birmingham on the 25th September

    Aimhigher National Conference


    On Thursday 2nd October 2008 Aimhigher is holding its National Conference in London. The conference will include a range of workshops from Aimhigher partnerships across England. The AchieveAbility Network has also been invited to deliver a morning and afternoon workshop titled 'Collaborative Aimhigher work: the evidence of impact for students with specific learning differences'. AchieveAbility Director Katherine Hewlett and AchieveAbility Expert David Crabtree will be delivering this workshop, the workshop presentation will be available shortly.
