Why I enjoy University as a dyslexic learner.

I enjoy university because there it is accepted people from all social backgrounds can attend, and be given an opportunity to learn to this standard. I thought when I got there, I would feel out of place, and probably be looked down upon by the students who were wealthier and much younger than I. My first surprise was that there were lots of people like me, lots had struggled to make the grades, had no spare cash, and were trying to study while working and bringing up a family. This gave us something in common straight away and soon friendships built, and support networks.

Coming from a community that thought university was only for the wealthy and privileged, I never dreamt that I would be attending university one day, I feel extremely proud to be here, and will give it my best and prove that, people with learning difficulties and from poor communities can do well.

I personally enjoy it because it was my decision to increase my knowledge and study for a degree, this I hope will give me a better career. The work is hard, and I almost gave up at one point due to the intensity of it. I recently found out I am dyslexic, which has now enabled me to receive the support I need to achieve my goal, I feel more confident and less anxious now I have someone there to turn to when I need it.

I have just completed the first year with out much help due to the late diagnosis, and passed every thing, however I would love to increase the quality of work I do, and hope the second year will see me achieve this now I have the support of a dyslexic tutor. I was also surprised at the numbers of students who also has support due to learning difficulties; this makes me feel less uncomfortable and not alone.

The support I receive is great, this comes from specialised dyslexic tutors, the teaching staff, disability support team and my person tutor. I feel I can turn to any one of them if I need to without feeling guilty or inadequate. All the staff are willing to help, and encourage individuals to reach their potential.
