AchieveAbility Interventions: A framework for whole class learning drawn from SpLD work

The AchieveAbility Interventions Framework materials have been developed in collaboration with SpLD experts, teachers, widening participation experts and are the result of a substantial piece of research work with four schools and colleges in London and the East of England. The research highlighted existing good teaching practice and demonstrated the benefit of these materials in mainstream education for all learners.

Practitioners and staff at subsequent reflection and discussion sessions expressed a high level of interest in developing, rolling out and embedding the framework ‘for whole class learning drawn from SpLD work’ within mainstream teaching. Feedback showed that the framework model needed to be divided into two distinct phases and the principles made more transparent. This was underpinned by the AchieveAbility Structured Framework (ASF) Model which was developed out of the research pilot, subsequent discussion and drawn from SpLD practice: The ASF model is explained in the Framework.

The framework stages and materials have been structured using this ASF model and incorporate approaches appropriate to SpLD and drawn from work proven to be successful. The overarching aims of this approach are: to create a more inclusive teaching and learning environment; to provide more opportunities for SpLD learners to utilise and share their strengths with others. The classroom practice should allow all learners to benefit from an awareness of their preferred learning style and so increase attainment, achievement and success.

The materials are based upon what has worked in the classroom and are designed to be accessible for staff working across subject areas, levels and modes of study. They have been developed to accommodate the needs of a range of learners and enable active learning for all. They do not attempt to replace the need for a specialist trained to teach and support SpLD learners or try to turn the teacher into an ‘expert’ on SpLD.

The framework also includes a checklist for possible signs of SpLD that was developed to enable teachers and practitioners to feel more confident in recognising possible SpLD. The checklist can be downloaded from the resources page.

AchieveAbility hopes the Framework provides a platform for further development within institutions and will encourage discussion and the sharing of practice.
