Inclusive Learning in Practice module

Working in collaboration AchieveAbility. the LLU+ at SouthBank University and the West London Lifelong Learning Network (WL LLN) developed the Inclusive Learning in Practice module. The module is a level 7 (MA) 20 credit module aimed at practicising teachers and educational professionals. The module was launched in November 2009 at the House of Commons. Credit is to be given to Dr Ross Cooper for his steer and guidance in devising this module.

Background
To meet the challenges and changes of 21st century Britain, the UK Government is reforming and raising the status of teaching by transforming teaching into a postgraduate profession. The target is that by 2018 all practicing teachers will have a Master level qualification.

The Inclusive Learning in Practice module has been specifically designed to address this requirement building on prior research and knowledge from the ‘AchieveAbility Interventions’ training package and the publication ’A framework for whole institutional inclusive teaching practice’.

The module is accredited by London South Bank University LLU+ and fits within the MA Framework for Teaching and Learning Skills. The module provides educational professionals with an opportunity to critically engage with theory and practice with academic and practical vigour such that inclusive pedagogy is embedded. The module can be combined with other modules to achieve a full Masters award providing greater recognition and accreditation for your knowledge and professional practice.

Module focus
The module is framed within the social model of disability and focuses on inclusive learning, professional practice, neuro-diversity and is bespoke for your context. The twelve taught sessions explore teaching and learning theories, and practices to examine the ways in which values and processes form part of the transformative process of widening participation. Learners will be encouraged to reflect upon their teaching practice through the study of a range of social, historical, cultural and policy-making discourses that have shaped practices in your institution.

The module aims to give learners the opportunity to:
• Critically and analytically understand and integrate theory and practice within your own context

• Effectively bring together knowledge from current theoretical thinking, discourses of learning differences and neuro-diversity to improve your own professional practice

• Develop your knowledge of cognitive thinking processes

• Understand multi-sensory classroom teaching practice to support a whole institutional inclusive approach

• Engage in collaborative learning through peer learning, discursive assessment and online discussion activities

• Identify issues and bring about change in your own work setting through the design and implementation of action research

• Develop professional and personal skills for higher/ lifelong learning, such as critical analysis, reflection, action
